'In'New Haven Colonial Records,' as furnished by Stuart T. Terry, of Southold, we learn that he was a very prominent man; a merchant, an auctioneer, teacher of a select school, and often drew up legal documents. He also had charge of the church money, and under date of 5 Nov., 1716, he says: 'Uncle Joshua Horton came to my house and weighed the church's money, Uncle Wells also being present.' To his eldest son, Azariah W., he wills Rawley's History and a smal cane, and to his grandson, son of Jonathan Horton, deceased, 'my homestead and houses in the first Parish of Southold, also my gun and silver-hilted sword.' He gives to the three daughters of his son Lazarus, 14 Pounds each; to his grandsons, sons of his son Ambrose, 'all the buildings where my son Ambrose now lives - son Ambrose to have the improvement of the land as long as he lives - also the farming implements he hath at Rone Oak.' He also makes bequests to his daughter Mary Mabel, and her son Moses. He appoints for his executors ' my trusty firend William Horton and my son Joseph Cleveland.' Will signed 3 Oct., 1764.      Joseph Browne married Dorothy Tuthill, daughter of John or Chalker John Tuthill and Mehitable Wells, BET. 1714 - 1715 at Oysterponds, Suffolk, New York. Joseph Browne 'JOSEPH BROWNE, son of Walter Browne was known as Justice Browne. There has been considerable dispute as to his parentage, but he is named in the Census of 1698 with Walter and Daniel as being one of a family by themselves and in his will of 1751, he mentions his brother Daniel and it is difficult to put any other consturction on his lineage by the evidence found.
'He married Dorothy, daughter of John and Mehitable (Wells) Tuthill, who died Feb. 4, 1774. He made his will May 30, 1751, which was proven July 16, 1751, in which he gives his wife Dorothy the use of all real estate during widowhood, except a peice of land lying on the north side of Oyster Pond Neck, which he gives to his son Joshua. He mentions his children besides Joshua, as: Dorothy and 'daughters married and unmarried' but not named; Benjamin who receives all his lands and buildings in Southold; Joseph to have property in Brookhaven; Selah and Jeremiah, youngest sons the same. He makes his wife Dorothy, daughter Dorothy and his brother Daniel, his executors. He died July 14, 1751.' Frost, Josephine C. 'Yates-Terry Genealogy', Film #1020788, pg. 19.

Hannah Brown, who married Joseph Youngs, was apparently the daughter of Joseph Brown (whose ancestry is not yet known), and Dorothy Tuthill, his wife, daughter of John3 and Mehitable (Wells) Tuthill, grand0daughter of John2 and Deliverance *King) Tuthill, great-grandaughter of Henry1 and Bridgett Tuthill from Norfolkshire, Eng.' 'It is said there were three brothers of the Browns - Israel, Samuel, and Richard - who came to Oysterponds about the year 1645 of 1650, and each purchased themselves a piece of land of the natives, to improve and erect
dwellings suitable for their families. The locations of these buildings have already been noticed.
'Israel's children I know not except Joseph, who married Dorothy, the daughter of John Tuthill 3rd called Squire John. By her he had Joseph, Benjamin, Hannah, and Polly. Hannah became the wife of Joseph Young, and Polly the wife of Ensign John King. Joseph Brown, Jr., married Mehitable, the daughter of Jeremiah Vail 3rd by whom he had eighteen children, viz....:
'Benjamin Brown, Esq., (brother to Joseph Brown Jr.), married Mary, the daughter of John Tuthill 4th, niece to her husband. Benjamin's children were, viz.: Gershom, Israel, George, Betsey, Polly, Jemima, Bethia.
'Betsey married a Mr. Taylor, of Southold, became a widow at forty-five years of age, and died in her ninetieth year.
'Jemima married Jonathan Terry Jr., and died in 1803.
'Bethia married Captain Lester Beebee, of Sag Harbor, the ship-builder before mentioned.
'Israel and Polly never married.
'Richard Brown Sr. left three sons. The oldest, who inherited the homestead, was Richard Jr., the second son was Samuel, and third David. Samuel had a daughter, married to Samuel Beebe, of Plumb Island, named
Rebecca. Her daughter married Samuel Brown Jr., whose daughter, Mary, married Amon Taber. In the year 1740, Richard Brown was commissioned a captain in the militia of Oysterponds, under George the second. He was
likewise appointed, with John Tuthill, Esq., to take charge of the heretofore mentioned cannon. If this John Tuthill 3rd was he who was called Squire John, he must, at the time, have been eighty two years of age, as he was born 1658, and died 1754, about ninety-seven years of age. This charge to Richard Brown was fifty-four years after his father's death; of course, if this was Richard Brown Jr., he too must have been an old man - I should suppose was born about the year 1700. He died about 1776, aged nearly eighty years. His wife was Hannah Hawk, mentioned before. He had sons, viz.: Richard 4th, Samuel, and Christopher; one daughter, Hannah. Richard 4th, had a son, Richard Brown 5th, and Richard 5th, had a son, who was Richard Brown 6th, who removed with his
family into the northern part of this State. There are now but tow families of the male line in this place, viz.: Deacon Peter Brown, of the sixth generation, and Captain Edwin Brown, of the seventh generation.
Richard Brown 4th, was with his brother Samuel, drowned in the month of March, 1770, both leaving families. There were four in the boat at the time, viz.: John King, Peter Brown, Richard Brown and Samuel Brown. They were all drowned in Gardiner's Ray, near Easthampton.

'Griffin says that Justice Joseph Brown was son of Israel Brown and both were noble hearted men. There is no evidence whatever of any Israel Brown at Southold at so early a date; nevertheless the names of Selah and Jeremiah, of two of the children of Joseph Brown, lead to the belief that they might have been of Reeve, or Vail ancestry.

'BENJAMIN BROWNE, son of Joseph and Dorothy (Tuthill) Browne, married at Orient, L. I., Mary Tuthill, April 2, 1739. The date of her death has not been found but in 1770, he married second, or perhaps third, Abigail Benjamin, who survived him and died Dec. 28, 1784 in her 58th year. His will, made in Southold, April 22, 1774 was proven May 10, 1774, he dying April 29, 1774. In his will he mentions his wife Abigail, leaving her his Great Bible, his gold buttons and the use of his riding chair. The Bible, buttons and chair for life only if she remains his widow. To his son Gershom Browne of Brookhaven he left the land there on which Gershom was living 'which is about ninety rods in width and three miles in length,' and a cow and a yoke of oxen. To his son Israel he left all his lands in Goshen, N. Y., and his acreage in Brookhaven on the west side of Isaac Smith's dwelling. To his son George, his property in Southold. To his four daughters, Mary, Jemima, Elizabeth and Bethiah he gave the remainder of his land in Brookhaven and his personal estate. His wife Abigail was the widow of Lt. Simeon Benjamin.' She was aged 34 in 1635, and probably died at Southold. She accompanied her husband to America in March 1685-6, with their five children, Mary, Katherine, William, Hannah, and Samuel.

Served in Colonial Assembly, several offices; called 'Chalker John', as he
was a Surveyor by trade; was the Kings Surveyor who laid out the route for
the King's Highway, a portion of which approximated the route of thecurrent
Old Country Road through Eastport, NY. The entire length of this road ran
from the ferry in Brooklyn to Easthampton. He was a Sheriff in 1695.
