William E. Elder was born in June 1865 at probably Perry, OH; That William is son of Hannah is certain. That he is son of Thomas Downey is my assumption.

He is always shown as William Elder.1 He was the son of Thomas Downey and Hannah R. Elder. William E. Elder appeared on the census of 5 July 1870 in the household of Thomas Elder at dwelling 604, Reading Twp, Perry, OH; Thomas 71 MD, Saw Mill
Hannah 25 OH, Housekeeper
Daniel 22 OH, Portable Saw Mill
William 5 OH
Downey, Thomas 52 Ireland, Laborer

William is certainly the son of Hannah Elder, as shown in the subsequent censuses of 1880, 1900 and 1910. That he is son of Thomas Downey is my judgment. RJ. William E. Elder was a witness when Thomas Downey and Hannah R. Elder were At some point between the birth of the twins and the 1880 Census Hannah and Thomas parted ways. between 1872 and 1879. William E. Elder appeared on the census of 17 June 1880 in the household of Hannah R. Elder at p. 58B, dwelling 194, Reading Twp, district 203, Perry, OH; Hannah, 32, OH (Widowed/Divorced box is checked)

It appears that Thomas Downey is just two dwellings away, but it is actually 9. The dwelling numbers on this page (58B) are misnumbered. The dwellings on it are numbered 192-199 but should be 200-207. (Page 57D is dwellings 184-192, and 58A is 193-199). William E. Elder witnessed the death of Sarah (Sadie) Elder on 10 July 1895 at Somerset, Perry, OH; died single - of Nervousness.2,3 William E. Elder appeared on the census of 1900 in the household of Hannah R. William E., son, 34, Born Jun 1865, Single.
Mary A., dau, 28, Born Jan 1871, Single.

The enumerator recorded Hannah as mother of 2, 2 living, but in the 1910 Census she's noted as mother of 3, 2 living. William E. Elder appeared on the census of 7 May 1910 at New Lexington Pike, dwelling 237, Reading Twp, Perry, OH; William, 44, Single, OH OH OH

General Edmund Pendleton Gaines1

M, b. 20 March 1777, d. 6 June 1849
General Edmund Pendleton Gaines From an early age Edmund Gaines showed an interest in military life; he joined the Army and spent many years on the American frontier. During the War of 1812 he was promoted to Brigadier General. He received a gold medal and special commendation from the Untied States Congress and the state congresses of Virginia, Tennessee, and New York for gallantry while defending Fort Erie in 1814. In 1839 Edmund Gaines married Myra Clark.

He General Edmund Gaines won his fame as a U.S. Army Commander in Florida during the Second Seminole War and as the captor of traitor Aaron Burr. In 1836 he led a 1,000-man army of troops into the wilds of Florida along the banks of the Withlacoochee River in an attempt to wipe out Indian threats to Alachua County settlers. But his army ran seriously short of rations and was close to starving, so the settlers that he had come to rescue went to rescue him instead--driving cattle through rain and darkness through Indian forces, carrying what supplies they could. Gaines was one of the few army generals to endear himself to the frontier settlers, and eighteen years later in 1854 when a new Alachua County seat was chosen he was the man who gave his name to the town. The photo was copied through the courtesy of Mrs. Helen Ellerbe.2

He was born on 20 March 1777 at Culpepper, VA.1 He died on 6 June 1849 at New Orleans, LA, at age 72.1
