Where is Sarah? Alfred James Steadman was Alfred served as a Private in Company I of the 42nd Wisconsin Volunteer
Infantry (a late War Regiment which saw no combat - stationed at Cairo, Illinois as Provost Guards in Southern Illinois). He enlisted at Liberty, Wisconsin on August 22, 1864 and served until he was mustered out of the Regiment - sick - on June 11, 1865. He died at Cairo, Illinois on June 13, 1865 of disease. (May be buried at Cairo, Illinois) on 11 June 1865.2 He died on 13 June 1865 at Cairo, IL, at age 36; Died of disease on way home 2 days after being mustered out of the Army.1
