While the first name is written "James", this, based on the child list from the 1860 Census, is most certainly Joseph. -RJ. Joseph T. Thomas witnessed the burial of Lucy A. Atkinson after 14 April 1888 at Union Chapel Cemetery, Randolph, IN; Transcription reads "Joseph T. Thomas Lucy A. Thomas died 4th mo. 14th day in the year 1888; aged ? y. 2 m. ?d."

This transcription was, early in 2005, found on one of the pages of Randolph Co. IN GenWeb (source 653), but is not found as of June, 2005.

Waynet (Source 755) shows this cemetery, and a Joseph Thomas there, but no Lucy - and no birth or death dates for Joseph.

In 1908, the County Directory shows, for Lucy's grandson Otis:
Otis, (Ivel) laborer, w First (Lucy). I know of no other Lucy's than his grandmother...so maybe the stone is referring to Joseph and Lucy's son James, who we know did die in 1888.^7,8 Joseph T. RJ searched every page of the 3 districts of Washington Twp, at Ancestry.com, and could not find this family.¹⁰ Joseph T. Thomas died after 28 April 1910.
