Nimrod Moore Nimrod Moore was a "riverboat gambler" who moved to Hamilton Co. with his wife and 12 children in 1835, then continued his wanderings. Two of his sons were elders in the Silverdale Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Some in the family farmed in Brainerd, and the road nearby became known as Moore Road.
Nimrod Moore was born in Virginia in 1794 and he married Sarah Jones, who was born there in 1795. Her father was Frederick Jones, a Revolutionary War veteran. Her brother, Jeremiah H. Jones, was nother Hamilton Co. pioneer.
Nimrod Moore was "a lineal descendant of John Moore of Ireland." Nimrod was apparently a free spirited man who was a saddler and who speculated in land over a wide area. He took his family to Bledsoe Co., then to McMinnville before pushing on prior to the Indian removal to the vicinity of White Oak Mountain.
By the time of the 1840 census, Sarah Moore was listed as the head of the household. She handled several land purchases in 1842, buying 40 acres from Daniel Temple for @33.12 ½ and 40 acres from Leroy Standifer for $100. She paid William Towry #120 for 80 acres.
She was "an industrious woman, full of energy and practical sense and endowed with the wisdom of economy. She was able to rear her children in comfort and give them such education as the facilities of the county put within her reach."
Nimrod Moore was at Sweetwater, Texas, and far from his large family when he died in 1856. Sarah Jones died July 24, 1868. She is buried at the Moore Cemetery on Standifer Gap Road near Jenkins Road.1
He and Sarah (Sally) Jones Sally was married ca 1808 to Nimrod Moore of Bledsoe Co. After 5 or 6 years of marriage, he took up drinking, being sullen, and associating in gambling companies. He abused her and her children. He moved them frequently. One time he left them in McMinnville, Warren Co. He went from there to Jasper in Marion Co. She and the children were kicked out of a rented house in McMinnville (the rent expired), and they moved to a cabin on Cumberland Mountain. She got word to her mother and brother who came and got her and the children. Nimrod came to her mother’s and she went with him to try to live in Jasper. He stayed drunk and would not support her and the family, so she went back to her mother’s house, where she now lives and has for the past five years. Nimrod came to her mother’s but left again to Cumberland Mountain. He took some of the children but left them at Cumberland Mountain without anything and they ran away and returned to her. He came again and took five of her children to Jasper, and then left them again and went from there to Hamilton Co. The children returned to her. Nimrod took up with another woman in Hamilton Co. Last April he came to where Sally was living on her brother’s land and took all of her property. Last summer he and that woman he was living with her committed to Hamilton Co. Jail for stealing.
The marriage if hereby dissolved between Sally Moore and her husband, Nimrod Moore.

Sarah (Sally) Jones1

Sarah (Sally) Jones To The Honorable, The General Assembly of the State of Tennessee
The undersigned petitioner, Sally Moore, represents that about 21 years ago she intermarried with a certain Nimrod Moore, of Bledsoe County, Tennessee, who remained a sober and industrious man for some 5 or 6 years, about that time he became unsettled, sometimes giving up to drinking and frequently associating with gambling companions, frequently being intoxicated himself, all of which your petitioner bore with thinking that he said Husband would become settled after some mature reflections about his past conduct. In all of which your petitioner was disappointed. For instead of doing better he became ill to his family, frequently abusing your petitioner in a bad condition to get support for her children and her herself, as she was taken to strange places where she had no acquaintances, and frequently left in this condition for weeks without any means of support, except by your petitioners own exertions of labor such as your petitioner could do.
At one time your petitioner was left with her children in McMinnville, Marion County by her said Husband who went from there to Jasper, Marion County and was to have been at home in McMinnville in a few days, But to your petitioners great mortification she and her children were turned out of house and home; the time for which she said house was rented having expired. In the absence of said Nimrod Moore, who had stayed two or three months instead of 2 or 3 days as your petitioner expected.
Your petitioner then, after being turned out of home in the absence of said Husband, by her own exertions had her little household furniture moved to a cabin in the side of the Cumberland Mountain until your petitioner could convey word to her mother and brother who immediately sent for her and family and took them into their own house, for she had no where else on earth to go to, not having seen her said Husband for 2 or 3 months. She had written letters to him about her condition. After coming to her mother’s, He, the said Nimrod Moore, came there. She went from there to Jasper with him to try to live with im again, but when she went there she found it utterly impossible to stay there owing to his continued drunkenness and not doing anything whereby to make a support for himself and family, owing to his continued drunkenness and bad trading. Your petitioner was continually stripped of everything that the law would take hold of. From there she moved back to her mothers where she now lives and has for the past 5 years. Said Moore after some time came and stayed at this lace awhile, and then after contracting many debts, which he has never paid. _______to move on the Cumberland Mountain again. She would not go with him. He took some of her little children and left them there without anything to sleep on or anything to eat. The children ran away and came home. It was shortly after that time he came in the night and took off 5 of her little children to Jasper, forty miles, and then left them again and went from there to Hamilton County and the children again came to your petitioner.
As before stated he went to Hamilton County, and there took up with another woman and is now living with her. Last summer the woman who he now lives and himself were both committed to Hamilton County jail for stealing.
On ten of April last he came where your petitioner was living on her brothers land when no person thinking him to be within 30 miles of the place and tore everything out of your petitioners house, and exposed them to all manner of stock there was running in the woods. The hogs destroyed some of your petitioners bacon that she had procured in his absence, for he has not in the last 3 years furnished your petitioner and family with the first item of provisions. When he came the last time he throwed everything out of your petitioners house he had a knife and made great threats how he would kill any person that interrupted his progress in destroying the property she had made in his absence.
The petitioner was not thinking of calling on your honorable body for a divorce until he abandoned your petitioner and had taken up with the woman with whom he now lives for his having been committed to jail for stealing.
