Samuel Sloan This family story as told by Mrs. Alice Beste, a granddaughter, relates that Samuel Sloan, as a young married man, did not have much money and lived and supported his wife and young family as a hired man. The gentleman for whom he worked, owned and raised fine horses. He had a beautiful stallion standing at stud and Samuel’s job was to take this stallion around the country as he was needed by the farmers of the area. As it happens in so many cases, the stud fees were not collected until the colts were born and then they were forgotten or ignored and sometimes never paid.

Samuel Sloan wanted to take his young family to Iowa but he seemed never to have enough money to break away from Pennsylvania and move. He had repeated his dreams so many times that most of his acquaintances knew what he wanted to do. Finally his employer told him that if he would collect the stud fees which were outstanding, he could have them so he could make his move.

Samuel made the rounds of the country trying to collect the stud fees and he did collect some. At one farm quite a bit of money was owed, but instead of paying in cash, the farmer gave a colt which cleared him of his debt.

After collecting what he could, Samuel went back to his employer who told him he could have the fees which he had collected and who also gave him his wages. Although this was still not enough money to move his family, he did have a nest egg and a colt which he could ride.

He left his family in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, and rode his colt to Colesburg, Iowa, where he established a home. He sent for his wife and family who boarded a barge and came down the Ohio River until they were within about a hundred miles of his homestead. They then came overland and the family was reunited in 1855 at Colesburg, Iowa.

Mary Ann Cuppett Isaac A. Cuppett, Sr., moved from Lancaster county to Bedford township early, and followed the blacksmith's trade. Later he purchased a farm of Abraham Moore, and moved to Chestnut ridge, where he farmed and worked at his trade until his death, in 1862. He married Mary Albaugh in 1802, and was the father of eight children--Nancy M. (Adams), David A., Philip, Mary A. (Sloan), Isaac A., William W., Ellen E. (McVicker) and Charlotte (Mickle). Nancy, David and Ellen are dead. Isaac A., Jr., married Catharine Winand in 1839, and farmed on several places until 1856, when he purchased the farm on which he now lives. Mr. Cuppett has improved the buildings and has an excellent farm. The land on Chestnut ridge, which the early settlers considered worthless, is now among the best in the county.
