Thomas (2), son of Thomas (1) Brigham, was born probably in Cambridge,Massachusetts, about 16 40, died in Marlborough, Massachusetts, November25, 1716. When his mother married Edmund Rice , Thomas went with them toSudbury and Marlborough. On attaining his majority he bought of his stepfather, for thirty pounds, a town-right in Marlborough of"Twenty-four acres with the fram e of a dwelling house thereon." Thisland, situated near Williams pond in the southwest part o f the town, wasthe beginning ofhis large farm. He was also one of the purchasers of theold pl antation "Ockoocangansett," which had been reserved for the Indiansout of the ancient boundar ies of Marlborough. On the old Thomas Brighamhomestead on the south side of the present Fores t street, something likea score of rods from the highway is a slightly raised rectangular plo t,about 30 to 75 feet, in the center of which is a large apple tree. Hererest the last of th e Marlborough Indians, including their last chief andabout thirty o f his followers. This spo t is sacredly cherished by thefamily of Brighams. The place is or was lately owned by Georg e F.Nichols, whose wife was a Brigham. The last male Brigham owner of theplace is said to hav e strikingly resembled his paternal ancest ry,"having thick, wavy black hair, black eyes an d red cheeks; a fine lookingman." The house stood a few rods above the brook which flowed t o WilliamsPond. The first dwelling, a log one built by Thomas, was burned duringhis absence b y flax catching fi re. In 1706 he built a frame house whichwas used as an ell by his son Gers hom who built a two-story house about1724. During Queen Anne's war the old house was used a s a garrison. In1791 the ell was taken down by Warren Brigham. Thomas Brigham was one ofthe p rincipal citizens of the town. He made his will April 21, 1716, anddied November 25 of the sa me year, sitting in his chair which is now inthe possession of Miss Martha L. Ames. His wil l was proved January 2,1717. He married (first) December 27 , 1665, Mary Rice, daughter of He nryand Elizabeth (Moore) Rice, and granddaughter of Edmund Rice, theimmigrant. He married (se cond) July 30, 1695, Susanna Shattuck, daughterof William Shattuck, of Watertown, and widow f irst of Joseph Morse andsecond of John Fay, whose first wife was Mary Brigham, sister of Thom asBrigham. Note:

From the FAY GENEALOGY, published in 1898

"John Fay....embarked May 30, 1656 at Gravesend, on board the ship Speedwell, Robert Locke, Master and arrived at Boston on the 27th of June. Among the passengers were Thomas Barnes, aged 20; Shadrack Hapgood, aged 14; Thomas Goodnow, aged 20; Nathaniel Goodnow, aged 16, and John Fay, aged 8 years. The emigrants here mentioned appear to have been bound to Sudbury, which had then been settled about seventeen years, where some of them at least, had parents or relatives. Considering the tender age of John Fay, it is highly probable that he had some relatives or friends in Sudbury, to which place he undoubtedly repaired. About that time a company from Sudbury were removing to a new grant which had been made to them, which immediately after was incorporated by the name of Marlborough. He accompanied these emigrants to the new plantation, as his name is found upon the Marlborough records as early as 1669, when he was made freeman and he had a wife and one child.

The first mention of his name, or even that of Fay upon the Colonial records is in 1671, when Thomas King, John Fay, John Howe, Sen., Peter Bent and others of Marlborough, petitioned for a grant of land, and the "Court judgeth it meete to referr the petitioners, in case they cannot rest where they be, to look for a meete place within our line to the westward of Conecticot river, to answer their expectation, and then present it to the Court, who will consider thereof." It does not appear that anything was ever done under the permission of the Court; but in 1675 John Fay appears among the proprietors of Worcester, and has a lot of 50 acres assigned to him in the eastern squadron, lying next to the County road to Boston.

Philip's War prevented in a great degree, the settlement of the town, but on the return of peace the proprietors of Worcester, among whom was John Fay, in 1678 agreed upon certain measures for the following commendable object, viz: 1st. Security from enemies in case of alarm; 2nd, for the better convenity of attending God's worship; 3rd, for the better education of their children in society; 4th for the better accommodation of trades people; 5th, for the better helps to civility; 6th, for more convenient help in case of sickness, fire or other casualty."

Notes for John Fay I:
Published Watertown records record the marriage date of John Fay and Susanna
Shattuck as the 5th of July. [John F Chandler PC 12.1.95]

John Fay arrived in Boston on June 27, 1656. John was by no means the first Fay to come to America. Available Town records in New England show for example that (1) Richard Fay resided in Dorchester MA in 1634; (2) Henry Fay, a weaver of Newberry MA died 6/30/1655 and (3) William Fay was admitted as a townsman in Boston in 1643. These Fays unquestionably preceded John Fay to America (1656), but there are no records to establish any interrelationship between any of them. On the other hand the direct lineage of the descendents of John Fay from his birth in 1648 down to 1898 were clearly and logically documented in the records accumulated in Orlin P. Fay's book.

John Fay came to America at the age of 8 years on the Speedwell (sister ship of the Mayflower), arriving in Boston Mass June 27, 1656. There is reasonable evidence that his father and a brother Michael had preceded him to America. Although there is no documented record of the father (David) or Michael's birth or death. Reference is made in the early Town records of Sudbury Mass. that the father of John and Michael was David Fay "who came to America prior to 1656."

The passenger list of the Speedwell lists five minors, including John Fay age 8 years. These young men were bound to Sudbury MA (settled 17 years previously) where each of them had parents or relatives. It is presumed that since John Fay was the youngest of these minors, he very likely had parents already Residing in Sudbury.

Shortly after John Fay's arrival a group of recent immigrants, including young John moved to a new grant which was newly incorporated under the name of Marlboro, MA. The early records of Marlboro show that John Fay was made a freeman in 1669, at which time he had a wife and child. In 1675 the name of John Fay appears among the proprietors of Worcester Mass., and that he had a lot of 50 acres assigned to him "in the eastern squadron, lying next to the County road to Boston." Although, he owned land in Worcester he continued to live in Marlboro until the marauding Indians during the Phillips War made it necessary to move his family to the greater security of Watertown Mass. While in Watertown he buried his first wife, Mary Brighan and one child. His second marriage was to Susan "Susanna" Shattuck who was the widow of Joseph Morse. She had 7 children by Morse and 4 by John Fay. After John Fay's death, Susan married as her third husband, Thomas Brigham, who was a brother of John Fay's first wife, Mary Brigham. It is interesting to record that from Susan's last marriage, one of her descendents was Peter Bent Brigham who left a sum of $1,000,000 which was not to be spent until 25 years after his death. By this time the fund had grown to $2,000,000 and was used to build the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, a world famous medical research hospital connected with Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass.      Mary Brigham married John Fay. Her married name was Fay. Mary Brigham ID: I0913
Name: Mary BRIGHAM
Sex: F
Birth: ABT. 1638 in Cambridge, Massachusetts
Death: 1676 in Watertown, Massachusetts
Note:
Mary was the daughter of Thomas and Mercy (Hurd) Brigham; born probably in Cambridge, Mass., about 1638; died in Watertown, in 1676; married John Fay, the emigrant, who settled in Marlboro, Mass., and died 5 May, 1690, age 50.

Mary was the first Brigham born in America, and as such deserves special mention. Paige, in his History of Cambridge (pp. 501-2), a most thorough and painstaking work, chronicles that "Mary went to Sudbury and Marlboro with her mother, brothers and sister, when her father died, where she married John Fay of Marlboro." And he cites evidence, as already indicated by a legal document (Mid. Prob. Recs., vii. 9), wherein, joining with other complainants, John Fay and Samuel Fay, children of Mary Fay of Marlboro, and heirs of Thomas Brigham, late of Cambridge began suit September 28, 1695, to recover certain lands in the possession of Samuel Hastings, who possessed also the Puritan Brigham homestead. John Fay Sr.'s wife was Mary, and there was no other Fay in Marlboro at that time of suitable age to be the father of said John, Jr., and Samuel Fay, parties to said suit. Paige was undoubtedly correct, and we must include in our genealogy of the Brighams the children of John and Samuel Fay, sons of Mary (Brigham) Fay. Both of them had large families, among them being sons who became the heads of numerous branches (see Fay Family). There was also a daughter, Mary Fay, who married Jonathan3 Brigham, her cousin, and a son of Thomas2 Brigham; they had 10 children, thus starting several male lines of Brighams. Hudson, in his Hist. of Marlboro, does not conflict with Paige's position; and he adds that John Fay retired (with most other Marlboroites), during King Philip's War, to Watertown, where he buried his wife Mary and a young son David, just coming five years.

John Fay, the husband of Mary Brigham, came to America when he was eight years of age. No mention is made of his parents. He is found in Marlboro as early as 1669. He married (2) Susanna, daughter of William Shattuck of Watertown and widow of Joseph Morse. As will be seen, she married for her third husband, Thomas2 Brigham. [Brigham (1907) p. 63]

George Derryberry "to have George go to VA and his son back to NJ, before going to NC does not fit the normal migration pattern. Further, only one time has been found where reference to him or his (possibly adopted) son used Derryberry, and in that case, the name being written in longhand and then not well formed letters, leaves it questionable.

I refer to "Essex Co. Deeds and Wills", #13, page 430 - 431; "Index of Marriages of Old Rappahannock & Essex Co., VA", Book 2, page 52. I have looked at the originals referred to in those books and the spellings to me are far from Derryberry."2

Frederick Bundy was (an unknown value) at Farming and raising stock..1 He Frederick Bundy, living in a different period from ours, had no chance to go to school. His education had to be self-obtained. He did not fail to sieze the opportunities which came his way, and so became a remarkably well informed man. At the time the family came to Illinois the journey was made int he old time cumberous team wagons.
The John Wilson family arrived by means of the same mode of travel.
Centralia Township at the time Frederick settled there in 1826, was as yet in its original wild state. As may be supposed, wild game and beasts of prey of many varieties abounded there, particularly wolves, to which he lay awake listening on many a night inside the rough log-cabin which he had built with his own hands. In time he cleared the land and erected for himself a suitable hime, and otherwise much improved the property which embraced four hundred acres. For years, he carried an active farming business and raised considerable amount of stock. Frederick Bundy was politically a staunch Democrat, and in those days he had to go over to Salem at election times to record his vote. In religious life he was a member of the Christian Church. His wife died in February, 1848, and the demise of the inseparable companion of life's journey as a great loss. He died in the fall of 1849, having however, married secondly Elizabeth Walker, and leaving a son by that marriage. He had eight children by his first wife, the eldest William Kell; Alexander, who married Margaret Breeze, and afterwards another member of that family, who is a farmer in Washington County; Nancy Jane, deceased, first married John Harper, and afterwards Reuben Aldersonl; Dorcas married Sidney Harmon both of whom are both dead; Jeanette who never married, also died; John joined the One Hundred and Eleventh Regiment, Company H; at the outbreak of the Civil War and died while in the service of his country; Robert was also in the Civil War, enlisting in the Jefferson County, Illinois, and died of small pox during his term of service; Sallie another daughter, married Thomas J. Hollowell and lives in Washingon with her husband.2 He 8 children by 1st wife, 1 son by 2nd.1 He was described at Staunch Democrat and member of the Christian Church.1 He was born in 1802 at Pasquotank, NC.1 He was the son of Jonathan Bundy and Dorcas Brothers.
